JOHN HART<1> born in England, first came to Stonington, Conn. then to Long Island. then to Hopewell, N.J. where he acquired considerable land.

Five sons followed him Ralph, Edward, John, Joseph and Nathaniel. 

Capt. Edward Hart was the father of John Hart the Signer of the Declaration of Independence. 

The Hart family was ranked among the leading families of Hopewell . The brothers and their descendants figured prominently in public affairs
